Top Story–The Death of Heath Ledger

Using the actor’s cellphone, Heath Ledger’s masseuse called actress Mary-Kate Olsen twice in California before dialing 911. She said she arrived at his New York City apartment at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday and called his cell phone at 3 p.m. When he did not answer, she entered the bedroom and set up her masseuse table. She then went over to him in his bed and shook him, but got no response. He was pronounced dead soon afterward.– US

Heath Ledger had been having problems sleeping, particularly since signing on to play the role of the Joker in Chris Nolan’s upcoming Batman epic "The Dark Knight."– People

Britney Spears showed up at a Beverly Hills elementary school, saying she was there to pick up someone else’s kids. The pop star, who lost custody of her own young sons on January 4, parked her car outside the school and spent 10 minutes smoking cigarettes and talking to herself while she waited for classes to let out. "She was just rambling and confused," said a witness who approached Spears to ask if she was OK.

Before driving off without any children the female witness added– "She said, ‘You’re so nice. You should give me your number. I don’t have very many friends."’– US

Johnny Depp, who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar earlier this week for his portrayal of the title character in the musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," has given $2 million to London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. In 2007, his daughter, then 8, spent nine days in the facility’s children’s ward due to kidney failure.– In Touch

Nicolas Cage has sold his Newport Beach, California, mansion for $35 million. The Oscar-winning actor bought the property for $25 million in 2005. – In Touch

Ellen Page, the 20-year-old who was nominated earlier this week for a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the comedy "Juno," has purchased her first apartment. The Halifax, Canada, building in which she will reside was previously a brothel. – In Touch

Births, deaths, weddings, break-ups

Guests who lingered after the wedding of comedian Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds knew there was trouble from the start. One source of tension, said friends, was a conflict between Edmonds and Murphy’s mother, Lillian Lynch. Another source said that the pair argued about where they would live. – People

Actor Chris Noth and his longtime girlfriend, actress Tara Wilson, have welcomed their first child. The boy was named Orion Christopher. – In Touch

Television personalities Johnny Fairplay and Michelle Deighton have welcomed their first child. The engaged couple named the girl Piper Addison Fairplay. – Life and Style
