seen with extension
Palace: Esperon needed to maintain anti-Red momentum

TWO senior bishops yesterday said President Arroyo’s decision to extend the tour of duty of AFP chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon could cause more unrest within the military ranks.

"There are many others who are worthy of trust and who can also deliver," said Archbishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa City, Batangas.

"When it’s over, it’s over. Why not follow the standard flow because there’s a rule for it, a norm for it," said Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz, a former president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

Influential US journal says GMA sank RP into morass of corruption

A HIGHLY influential American academic journal has published a stinging rebuke of President Arroyo, accusing her of "sinking Asia’s oldest democracy" into "a morass of corruption and scandal."

"Arroyo continues to undermine the country’s democratic institutions in order to remain in power," wrote political science Prof. Paul D. Hutchcroft of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in an analysis that came out in the January 2008 issue of the "Journal of Democracy."

Published by the Johns Hopkins University Press, the "Journal of Democracy" is a project of the International Forum for Democratic Studies and the National Endowment for Democracy.

Melo won’t take seat
before confirmation

NEWLY named Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Jose Melo yesterday said he will not assume his new post until his appointment is confirmed by the Commission on Appointments.

President Arroyo announced on Friday night in Switzerland her choice of the former Supreme Court justice.

"Hintayin na muna natin yung confirmation ng CA bago tayo maupo tutal sa February 2 pa naman mawawalan ng chairman ang Comelec," Melo said.
