SSC-R off to hot start

SAN Sebastian’s title-retention bid got off to a flying start after it drubbed University of Perperual in a fight-marred game yesterday in the 84th NCAA juniors basketball tournament at the Astrodome.

The four peat-seeking Staglets pounded on the Altalettes right from the start and never let up until the final buzzer en route to their first victory in the season via a lopsided 88-61decision.

Veteran slotman Arvie Bringas provided the firepower with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds while rookie guard Almond Vosotros laid bare his potential by leading all San Sebas-tian scorers with 17 points.

"The boys worked hard on both sides of the court. They’re not just shooting well, they are also guarding well. I hope they continue doing what they’re doing now," said Staglets coach Raymund Valenzona.

A melee late in the second quarter led to the ejection of four players from each squad and took some of the luster off the victory.

San Sebastian’s Jerome Delgado and UPHD’s Joshua Alolino battled for a loose ball at the 3:45 in the second period when things got out of hand and sparked a bench-clearing incident.

Delgado and Alolino were slapped with a personal foul each while Staglets Raffy Gusi, John Trinidad, Jeric Estrada and Joel Laconico and Altalettes Ronald Torres, Joel Jolangcob, Jesserie Teves and Eugene Canuza were ordered out of the playing court for leaving the benches.

Meanwhile, the San Beda Red Cubs demolished comebacking Malayan High School (formerly Mapua) 104-33 in the curtain-raiser and the Jose Rizal Light Bombers upset the Letran Squires 107-105.

Art Dela Cruz led the Cubs with 16 points and eight rebounds while Joed Villena’s crucial lay-up with 1.3 seconds remaining shattered the 105-tie and gave the Light Bombers the morale-boosting win. (Christine Moncada)
