Back to the '80s
Tony Hadley on 'Gold' tour

When most people hear the word "gold," they think of something precious or rare-something everyone wants, which usually means jewelry. But in this case, it means a ticket to "Gold," the upcoming Philippine tour of Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley.

Named after one of Spandau Ballet's biggest hits in the '80s, "Gold" will see Hadley-together with the band's original drummer John Keeble-do two major shows in the Philippines. They will be at the Clark Expo in Pampanga on August 8 and the Araneta Coliseum on August 9.

The Mirahel Band and the Sabado Boys DJ Myk, Jimmy Bondoc, Luke Mijares, Mike Chan, Paolo Santos and Top Suzara will appear onstage with Hadley and Keeble as their guests.

Spandau Ballet was a major player in the '80's music scene, which was characterized by the growing popularity of pop-rock and new wave. Their hit singles include "Highly Strung," "Lifeline," "Only When You Leave," "Round and Round," "Through the Barricades" and "True." The latter continues to be popular among teenagers, as the Black Eyed Peas have covered it and given it a fresh-sounding R&B twist. The Peas' version can be heard on the "50 First Dates" soundtrack.

That Spandau Ballet's songs still resonate with the kids of today is a testament to their massive success in the '80s. During "Gold," expect Hadley and Keeble to remind concertgoers just how they scaled such heights. They will do all of the band's old hits, as well as songs from Hadley's solo debut "The State of Play," which was released soon after Spandau Ballet disbanded.

Hadley's solo career was jumpstarted by EMI Records and soon after he proceeded with his own label, SlipStream Records. His first single was "Build Me Up," which was used in the film "When Saturday Comes." Shortly thereafter, in December 1996, Hadley embarked on an orchestral tour of Europe, along with Joe Cocker, Paul Michiels, Dani Klein and Guo Yue, playing to 500,000 people in six weeks.

Upon his return from that tour, Hadley signed a joint deal with PolyGram TV, and released an album, "Tony Hadley," in 1997, which included covers and songs that were chosen to match his voice. The album also featured some of his own self-penned songs, such as "She," the song that Hadley wrote for his daughter, Toni.

To this day, Hadley continues to touch base with his fans and Spandau's by touring. His permanent band line up includes Keeble (drums), Phil Taylor (keyboards), Phil Williams (bass guitar), Richie Barrett (guitar), and Andrea Grant on back-up vocals.

"Gold," featuring Tony Hadley and John Keeble of Spandau Ballet, is a production of Live Artists Production Inc. and Steve O'Neal Productions and co-presented by ABS-CBN, "ASAP '08" (Official TV Partner), One World Music Productions Inc., MYX Channel Your Choice, Your Music, PCSO, SMART, PLDT and Mendez Medical Group with the support of A.
