Recto appointment

'Good man, bad administration'

PRO-ADMINISTRATION Sen. Joker Arroyo yesterday said former senator Ralph Recto, his fellow member in the "Wednesday Group," is most qualified to head the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and has the controversial expanded value-added tax (EVAT) law to show for it.

"He's the author of the EVAT and he never regretted it. He wanted the position because he knows he can handle the job. Who has the appointing power is beside the point," Arroyo said.

Arroyo and Recto both ran under the Team Unity ticket of the administration in the 2007 senatorial elections but only the former made it.

ARCHBISHOP Oscar Cruz yesterday said the new appointees of President Arroyo led by newly minted National Economic Development Authority chief Ralph Recto must prove that they are not mere political accommodations for losing under the administration's senatorial ticket in the 2007 polls.

"Let them not allow Malacañang to make them pawns in its many and big graft and corrupt practices," Cruz, former president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, said.

Aside from Recto, fellow losing senatorial bets Michael Defensor and Tito Sotto were recently appointed to government posts. Defensor was named chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 and Sotto as head of the Dangerous Drugs Board.

Don't hold breath on oil cut: Reyes

ENERGY Secretary Angelo Reyes yesterday said no price rollback is expected from oil companies this week despite the softening of world crude prices as price per barrel dropped by $17.

"That's very good news but a five-day drop does not establish a trend," Reyes said.

He could not also say if another round of increases in pump fuel prices is in the offing this weekend.
