Palace: Not looking for Agnes
Denies returning JBC list aimed at including Devanadera

MALACAÑANG yesterday belied reports that President Arroyo returned to the Judicial and Bar Council the shortlist of nominees for the two vacancies in the Supreme Court just because she did not find the name of acting Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera.

"The President returned the list asking the JBC to submit some more names so that the President will have a wide more range of choices. Right now there are two vacancies," Ermita said.

Ermita said that while Devanadera is qualified, it is up to the JBC members to include her or anyone else in the new list of nominees.

Mike is in party

PRESIDENT Arroyo left yesterday for the United States for the July 30 meeting with US President Barack Obama at the White House.

But the bigger news, in the eyes of Arroyo watchers, is that First Gentleman Mike Arroyo will be accompanying her. There had been rumors that Mr. Arroyo would not step on US soil for fear of questioning by authorities on supposed financial transactions.

Mrs. Arroyo will be the first Southeast Asian leader to be invited by the Obama administration.

Obama urged: Look into GMA’s rights record

ARROYO critics yesterday started their "heckling" over a range of issues from Charter change, human rights violations, and the size of the Arroyo entourage in advance of the July 30 meeting (July 31 in Manila) between President Arroyo and US President Barack Obama.

The political opposition urged Obama to "sternly" remind Arroyo that the US government will not tolerate human rights violations and efforts by administration allies to amend the 1987 Constitution.

Prominent opposition personalities including former Vice President Teofisto Guingona and former Senate President Jovito Salonga appealed to Obama to take notice of the many issues against Arroyo.
