NAIA 3's 'rolling opening'
set before end of 2008

THE Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA 3) is being given the final touches in preparation for a "rolling opening" before the end of this year, Angel Atutubo, assistant manager for security and emergency services, said yesterday.

Atutubo said Takenaga engineers assured the Manila International Airport Authority headed by general manager Alfonso Cusi that the ongoing repairs would be finished this month.

He said the terminal would accommodate all domestic flights by flag carrier Philippines Airlines, and Cebu Pacific.

"We are now deploying some personnel to position some x-ray machines and walk-through detectors, and seeing to it that passenger flow would be smooth," he said.

"The old domestic airport is too crowded and Cebu Pacific flights are almost the same as that of PAL, so there is an urgent need to operate the domestic portion of Naia 3," Atutubo said.

Atutubo said NAIA 3 has three sectors: commercial, departure, and arrival.

He said the departure and arrival areas would be made operational ahead of the commercial sector where restaurants, coffee and curio shops would be located.

He added that routes and designated areas for those sending off or welcoming passengers have also been readied.

He said Takenaka engineer Renato Layog had briefed airport security officers about the sensitive spots that would have to be subjected to closer management. - Jay Chua
