An alliance of overseas Filipino workers’
organization in the Middle East said an OFW who is on death row
has reiterated his plea for his children’s educational needs as
he and his OFW wife could no longer send their children to
school.
"Dondon Lanuza asked for help to pursue his
plea to OWWA to consider giving an scholarship grant for his two
children under the OWWA scholarship program," said John Leonard
Monterona, Migrante-Middle East regional coordinator.
Monterona said the Kapatiran sa Gitnang
Silangan, a pioneer member-organization of Migrante in Saudi
Arabia, asked Labor Secretary Marianito Roque, who is chairman
of the OWWA board of trustees, to exempt Dondon Lanuza from the
OWWA scholarship policy limitations and allow his two children
to avail of a special scholarship this coming school opening
until they finish college or two-year vocational course."
An OWWA official was quoted s\as saying that
Lanuza’s membership of two years in OWWA is no longer valid and
that he been in jail since 2000.
Monterona said more than 40 OFWs are on death row in several
countries.
