OFW on death row seeks
scholarships for his kids


An alliance of overseas Filipino workers’ organization in the Middle East said an OFW who is on death row has reiterated his plea for his children’s educational needs as he and his OFW wife could no longer send their children to school.

"Dondon Lanuza asked for help to pursue his plea to OWWA to consider giving an scholarship grant for his two children under the OWWA scholarship program," said John Leonard Monterona, Migrante-Middle East regional coordinator.

Monterona said the Kapatiran sa Gitnang Silangan, a pioneer member-organization of Migrante in Saudi Arabia, asked Labor Secretary Marianito Roque, who is chairman of the OWWA board of trustees, to exempt Dondon Lanuza from the OWWA scholarship policy limitations and allow his two children to avail of a special scholarship this coming school opening until they finish college or two-year vocational course."

An OWWA official was quoted s\as saying that Lanuza’s membership of two years in OWWA is no longer valid and that he been in jail since 2000.

Monterona said more than 40 OFWs are on death row in several countries.
