Lacson calls for tax revolt
Urges non-payment until Con-Ass is dead
BY JP LOPEZ
SEN. Panfilo Lacson yesterday called for a "tax revolt" to
protest moves to amend the Constitution through a Senate-less constituent
assembly.
Lacson said this would also ensure that taxpayers’ money
would not be used by the Arroyo administration to perpetuate itself in power
beyond 2010.
The senator said businessmen and even ordinary taxpayers
should withhold paying taxes until there are clear signs that administration
allies at the House of Representatives are abandoning their plans and that
President Arroyo is stepping down from power next year.
THE number of influenza A(H1N1) cases
in the country continued to rise with 54 new cases
reported in a span of 24 hours.
The overall total has breached the 200
mark and is now at 247 since monitoring started on May 1.
The health department said all the new
cases, two of them foreigners, are manifesting mild
symptoms. The new batch is composed of 29 females and 25
males.
THE Supreme Court, with Chief Justice Reynato
Puno as ponente, yesterday unanimously dismissed for being
premature two consolidated petitions filed by lawyer Oliver
Lozano and daughter Evangeline, and businessman Louis Biraogo to
declare as void House Resolution 1109.
In addition, the tribunal said the
petitioners lacked "legal standing."
HR 1109 seeks to convene the House of
Representatives into a Constituent Assembly (Con-Ass) to amend
the Constitution without the participation of the Senate.
