“NON in cruciatu; Sedcausa quae facet martyrem.” is the Latin transcription of Saint Augustine of Hippo’s declaration: “It is not the punishment but the cause that makes the martyr.” Robert Besana’s panoramic, mural-sized work entitled “Imitating St. Matthew’s Martyrdom” is a recreation of “The Martyrdom of St. Matthew” by the Italian painter Michelangelo Marisi da Caravaggio, painted in 1600.
