NPA rebels raid
police
outpost in Negros
BACOLOD CITY — Armed men claiming to be New
People’s Army rebels raided and overran a coastal police
outpost in Sagay City, Negros Occidental, on Friday night, and
carted away two M-14 assault rifles, but spared the lives of
two militiamen.
Supt. William Señoron, Sagay police chief,
yesterday said five armed men barged into the police precinct in
Brgy. Vito, Sagay City, at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 29, and disarmed
the two paramilitary men who were having dinner.
Senoron said the raiders arrived at the port
area of Brgy. Vito, Sagay City, on board a pump boat. They also
took police uniforms before fleeing towards Escalante City, on
board the same motor boat.
Two policemen, who were only armed with
pistols, identified as SPO2 Malinter Gatinao and SPO1 Remegio
Cabaluna responded to the raid and pursued the suspects.
However, the presence of many civilians prevented them from
firing their guns.
The raid lasted only several minutes, and was
done without firing a single shot.
Senior Supt. Rosendo Franco, provincial police director, said
raid came several months after a group of armed men, who also
claimed to be NPA rebels, strafed and raided a marine sanctuary
outpost at Maca Reef in Brgy. Old Sagay, Sagay City, where two
Bantay Dagat members were injured.
