Christie’s to auction
Sainsbury collection

LONDON – Christie’s will offer for sale the private collection of the late Simon Sainsbury, estimated to be worth around 15 million pounds ($29.78 million) which includes English furniture and pottery and paintings by Reynolds, Degas and Matisse.

The art collector and philanthropist, who died in 2006, also bequeathed paintings estimated to be worth up to 100 million pounds to two national collections.

Proceeds from the Christie’s sale will go to the Monument Trust charity, established by Sainsbury in 1965.

Among the highlights of the furniture collection is a pair of George III mahogany hall chairs attributed to John Linnell from the late 18th century which are expected to fetch 250-400,000 pounds.

British painters in the sale include Joshua Reynolds and Stanley Spencer, and there are paintings by Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard and Paul Signac, whose Pointillist picture Collioure. Les Balancelles is expected to fetch 1.8-2.5 million pounds.

The bulk of the collection will be sold in London on June 18, while the Impressionist paintings will be auctioned as part of Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art sales on June 24 and 25. Reuters
