LONDON – Christie’s will offer for sale the
private collection of the late Simon Sainsbury, estimated to be
worth around 15 million pounds ($29.78 million) which includes
English furniture and pottery and paintings by Reynolds, Degas
and Matisse.
The art collector and philanthropist, who
died in 2006, also bequeathed paintings estimated to be worth up
to 100 million pounds to two national collections.
Proceeds from the Christie’s sale will go to
the Monument Trust charity, established by Sainsbury in 1965.
Among the highlights of the furniture
collection is a pair of George III mahogany hall chairs
attributed to John Linnell from the late 18th century which are
expected to fetch 250-400,000 pounds.
British painters in the sale include Joshua
Reynolds and Stanley Spencer, and there are paintings by Edgar
Degas, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard and Paul Signac, whose
Pointillist picture Collioure. Les Balancelles is expected to
fetch 1.8-2.5 million pounds.
The bulk of the collection will be sold in London on June 18,
while the Impressionist paintings will be auctioned as part of
Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art sales on June 24 and 25.
