WITH Glen Bocolon and JP Alvarez leading the
way, San Mig Coffee notched its second straight win yesterday,
an 86-68 drubbing of Noosa Shoes in the PBL Lipovitan Amino
Sports Cup at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Bocolon, who has been silent the past games,
opened the third quarter with a triple and completed a
three-point play in a bristling 7-0 run two minutes after to
finish with a career-high 19 points. In all, Bolocon had three
triples on top of 9 rebounds, five of them offensively, to lead
the scoring for the Coffee Kings for the first time.
The Coffee Kings also drew huge numbers from
veteran Neil Raneses and birthday boy Alcarez who chipped in 18
and 14 points, respectively.
"We have yet to win two straight games so I
challenged the boys to go for it," said coach Koy Banal. "Itinaas
ko lang ang ante and the boys responded well. Next time three
straight naman.
"Kahit papaano, malaking tulong ni JP sa team
ngayon, iba talaga kapag birthday mo, inspired ka," beamed Banal
of the former Letran star who also had eight assists and three
steals in 32 minutes of action.
In the second game, Pharex continued its
giant-killing run by downing Hapee Toothpaste 100-96.
Francis Allera, Sean Co and Don Villamin came
through with clutch baskets down the stretch as Pharex notched
its fourth win in five games. In their maiden campaign last
year, the Medics won only twice in 10 matches.
Allera sizzled with a game-high 18 points but
it was Villamin who stood out the most with 15 points, eight
rebounds and eight assists.
Ian Saladaga managed only six points this
time but he made life miserable for Fil-Am Gabe Norwood in the
payoff period with his pesky defense.
"He did an awesome job guarding Norwood,"
said Pharex coach Carlo Tan.
Alcaraz’s explosion made up for the absence
of ace guard Bonbon Custodio who suffered a calf muscle injury
the last time out.
Aside from the red-hot shooting of the three,
Banal also credited the team’s solid defense for the win.
With Mark Balneg and Paul Sorongon alternating on Noy Javier,
the former University of Perpetual Help Dalta System star was
held to just two free throws, a far cry from his heroic role the
last time. Javier, who scored a buzzer-beating trey that lifted
Noosa to a 77-76 win over Hapee, missed all his eight field goal
attempts, four of them from the 3-point area.
