Batang Pier notch fifth straight win

JASON Castro and Chad Alonzo hit seven points in the payoff period as Harbour Centre outlasted Toyota Otis 89-83 yesterday and stayed unbeaten in the PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Castro scored five of the team’s last six points, including a booming triple, to help the Batang Pier notch their fifth straight win in as many outings.

Protecting a slim 83-81 lead, Castro drained his only triple of the game which turned out to be the blade that slashed the collective throats of the Sparks who dropped to 0-5.

Castro led four other Harbour Centre players in double figures with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. He also had four rebounds and three assists to boost his bid for a very rare third straight MVP plum.

In the first game, Burger King outlasted Bacchus Energy Drink 53-50 to improve its record to 4-2.

After a scoreless performance in the first three quarters, the 6-foot-3 Gregorio suddenly came alive in the payoff period, knocking in two triples, including one that shattered a 48-48 count with still more than three minutes left.

"That was the turning point of the game. I have to give that to the other Gregorio of the team," said a beaming Burger King coach Allan Gregorio. "It came just at the right time."

It was actually a perfect "hit" as Gregorio managed to beat the 24-second shotclock in the low-scoring game.

"We really strug-gled this time but I’m glad we managed to come back and finish it," said Gregorio.

"We just hope to play better the next time."

After Gregorio’s triple, both teams struggled offensively as they failed to score a single field goal the rest of the way.

Abby Santos made it 52-48 for Burger King after splitting his charities but Mark Yee’s own free throws closed the gap anew 50-52, with 5.7 ticks left.

The Raiders had the chance to send the game into overtime after Kiel Misa missed his first gift shot but Christian Luazon–who owns the conference record of 32 points–missed a potential game-tying three-point shot.

For a while, the Raiders appeared headed to their third straight win when they took a 38-30 lead early in the fourth but Mike Bravo and Gregorio hit back-to-back triples to fueled the team’s big comeback.

Misa led the whoppers with 12 points on top of eight assists, four rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes of action.

Luanzon again paced the Raiders with 11 points.
