Palace: Up to CA to curb abuse
of authority by its members

DEPUTY Presidential spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said over the weekend that it is up to the Commission on Appointments (CA) to take the appropriate action to curb politicking or abuse of authority within its ranks.

Fajardo said politics or abuse of authority should not play a role in the confirmation of officials, especially those who have earned their promotion like the seven star-rank officers and 17 colonels from the Armed Forces through hard work and dedication to service.

Confirmation of the soldiers' appointments was suspended by the CA last week after Sen. Jamby Madrigal made a wholesale invocation of Section 20 of the CA rules which allows her to stop the process without need for explanation.

Agusan Rep. Rodolfo Plaza, CA majority leader, who called Madrigal dumb and fishing for attention, has proposed the imposition of sanctions against members who would abuse their position and exercise of power.

Madrigal had also vowed to continue to invoke Section 20 until the CA is rid of supposed "deeply rooted corruption" where only those with backers make it through.

Fajardo said Plaza, as a respected member of the CA, is in the best position to recommend actions "that would limit perceived abuses and or politicking in the Commission on Appointments." - Jocelyn D. Montemayor
