AGHAM for national development

AGHAM is a non-stock, non-profit corporation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and is accredited with the COMELEC in the party-list system. As a sectoral organization of Filipino scientists, science workers and other Filipino citizens, it is a strong advocate of the important role of science and technology in the national development agenda.

AGHAM’s national president is Dr. Emil Q. Javier, former President of the University of the Philippines and currently President of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), which is composed of recognized researchers of the Philippines. His address is Los Baños, Laguna. His telephone numbers are: (049) 536-0177, cell phone 0915-563-3071; with email address : eqjavier@yahoo.com.

AGHAM intends to: 1) promote science education and a culture of science among our people, 2) craft legislation and advocate national policies and programs that will advance science and technology for sustainable development and well-being of the Filipino, 3)assist and support Filipino science workers engaged in research and development, in invention and popularization of technologies and products, to serve the needs of the nation, and 4) promote the welfare and well-being of Filipino science and technology workers and the sustainability of science-based institutions, organizations and enterprises.

AGHAM’s priorities are: 1) promotion of a much-needed culture of science including establishment of science centers and museums nationwide and support of youth science clubs, educational TV and radio programs, 2) scholarships for young, bright deserving Filipinos for careers in science and mathematics, in engineering, and in the technical and teaching professions, 3) realistic budgets of science, mathematics and technical education in the public schools and state colleges and universities, 4) implementation of the benefits under the Magna Carta for Science and Technology workers (RA 8489), 5) support for distance and open learning to broaden access to quality education, and 6) support for the research agencies of the executive departments responsible for agriculture, health, energy, industry, transportation and communication, natural resources, and environment.

AGHAM’S platform has been designed to accelerate sustainable development in the Philippines, for despite the reported economic gains, there is evidence that our country lags behind our ASEAN neighbors.

There is a need to broaden the choice of our people in electing their representatives to the law making bodies of our country. AGHAM provides the opportunity to do this. Apart from this, it is now recognized that science-based legislations, programs and projects have an important role in sustainable development. Directed researches are needed and results should be applied to benefit all sectors of our society.
