FORMER first lady Imelda Marcos has decided to take up anew
her earlier plan to run for mayor of Manila after supporters showed her 150,000
signatures urging her to do so, Marcos spokesman Ding Diaz said.
Marcos had earlier shelved her mayoral plans and proferred
grandson, commercial model Borgy Manotoc, in her stead. Manotoc, however, has
not made any move to join politics.
If Marcos indeed runs for mayor of Manila, she will be
contesting the post on May 14 against a crowded field made up of Ali Atienza,
son of incumbent mayor Lito Atienza; incumbent Vice Mayor Danny Lacuna, Sen.
Alfredo Lim, and Manila Representatives Joey Hizon and Rodolfo Bacani.
Marcos, 77, once served as governor of Metro Manila during
martial law.
She also represented the first district of Leyte at the House of
Representatives from 1995 through 1998. – Gerard Naval
