THE country’s best junior golfers plunge
into action in the Samsung Jungolf Interclub championships
starting today at the Ayala Greenfield Estates course in
Calamba, Laguna.
One hundred and seventy junior players
representing 15 clubs duel for team and individual honors over
three days at Ayala Greenfields which opened its doors for
tourney.
Alabang, Philippine Navy, Orchard, Manila
Southwoods, Aguinaldo, Valley, Eagle Ridge, Club Intramuros,
Royal Northwoods, Wack Wack, Alta Vista of Cebu, The Country
Club, Riviera, Mt. Malarayat and host Ayala Green-field are
represented.
Samsung and Ayala Greenfield are
co-presenting the Interclub leg of the summer circuit
sanctioned by the National Golf Association of the Philippines
and the Federation of Philippine Golf Clubs and backed by
Philippine Airlines.
Looming as the teams to beat are The
Country Club 1, bannered by reigning Philippine Ladies Open
titlist Chihiro Ikeda, Orchard led by Korean Koo Jae Min and
former world champ Wolen Superal, and Manila Southwoods 1 with
Sunshine Baraquiel and Regine de Guzman at the helm.
Aside from the Interclub trophies, slots to
the 29th Asia-Pacific Championships the country is hosting on
May 5-9 at the Southwoods are also at stake.
The top two players each in boys Class A
and Class B and the top girl performer in the same division
will form the Philippine team to the As-Pac meet that will
feature participants from at least 14 countries.
To be contested are team trophies in
Division I for Classes A (15-17 years) and B (13-14) and
Division II for Classes C (11-12) and D (9-10). There will be
individual battles in all age categories up to Class E (7-8)
and Class F (6-and under).
