Harbour stretches win run

RANGED against an old rival, Harbour Centre fired on all cylinders yesterday to trounce Hapee Toothpaste 88-69 and keep its unbeaten run going in the PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

After a slow start, the Batang Pier came through with a big run in the second quarter to rip the game wide apart and notch their sixth straight win and eighth overall since beating the Complete Protectors in the finals last conference.

"We just took away their strength and pressured them a lot. We also challenged their shooters," said Harbour coach Jorge Gallent. "And our outside shooting clicked."

Jonathan Fernandez and Jason Castro did most of the damage as they finished with 22 and 15 points, respectively.

From a tight 16-10 lead in the first quarter, the Batang Pier unloaded 24 points in the second quarter that Fernandez highlighted with back-to-back triples to post a commanding 40-24 lead.

The Complete Protectors never recovered after that TY Tang, Jeff Chan, Chad Alonzo and Jerwin Gaco joined the fray.

Earlier, Jonathan Al-dave provided the spark while Ronald Bucao supplied the needed firepower in the final quarter as Toyota Otis finally snapped a five-game losing run, scoring a 92-86 win over San Mig Coffee.

Aldave keyed a decisive breakaway by Toyota Otis early in the final frame by scoring seven straight points, including a triple, before the 5-foot-6 Bucao took charge, draining another triple to cap a mighty 10-3 run that gave the Sparks an imposing 79-65 lead.

Bucao completed his heroics by making all his four free throws while Aldave added two more gift shots to finally seal Toyota’s first win in the season-ending tournament.

With their second straight loss, the Coffee Kings slipped to 2-4.

"We got a big break late in the third and luckily we were able to sustain it," said coach Ariel Vanguardia. "Hopefully, this will be the start of something good for the team."

Vanguardia was all praises for the wily Bucao who finished with 16 points on a solid 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw area. He also had three assists and two rebounds.

"Bucao stepped up big time for us today. His gutsy plays helped us turn the tide," said Vanguardia.

The game was close until Bucao strung up seven points, including a completed three-point play that gave the Sparks a 69-62 lead going into the final 10 minutes.

Chito Jaime dished out a double-double for Toyota Otis with 17 points and 12 rebounds as he kept the Sparks from falling apart in the first half.
