Two great adventures and explorers, Indiana
Jones and Rick O' Conell, are back on the job they do well.
Their amazing quests are put to an end this year with the
release of two comeback adventure movies "Indiana Jones and
the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "The Mummy: Tomb of the
Dragon Emperor."
Directed by Steven Spielberg, executive
produced by George Lucas and starring Harrison Ford as
Professor Henry "Indiana" Jones, this fourth film of the
popular series is set in 1957 and is intended to evoke such
genre, with the very familiar "Indiana Jones" musical theme.
Indiana Jones is having a quiet life
teaching before being thrust back into his old adventuring.
When we last saw Indy, he was riding off into the sunset in
1989's "The Last Crusade," set in 1938 near the start of World
War II. The new movie, however, is set at the height of the
Cold War in 1950's, so the character has aged.
This time, however, he is not struggling
with the Nazis, instead he battles agents of the Soviet Union
led by Irena Spalko, a villainous Russian agent played by
Oscar Winner Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) who is after the
crystal skull. Producer Frank Marshall explains the mystery
behind the coveted artifact. He explains, " They are shaped by
higher powers or alien powers or came from another world, or
an ancient Mayan civilization had the powers."
Indiana Jones journeys together with Mutt
Williams played by Shia LaBeouf ("Transformers"), a
motorcycle-riding greaser and Indiana's sidekick who brings a
youthful arrogance to the story, giving him banter with the
older and wiser Jones. In efforts to distance the skull from
the Russians, Indy and Mutt journey across New Mexico,
Connecticut, Mexico City, and the jungles of Peru, as well as
the warehouse from the end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Also,
members of the great cat are Karen Allen ("Malcolm X," "The
Perfect Storm") who reprises her role as the feisty Marion
Ravenwood and Ray Winstone ("Beowulf") as Mac, both a friend
and competitor of Indy.
Unlike Indy, fans haven't seen Rick
O'Connell in the movies for just a short while since the
release of "The Mummy Returns" in 2001. The last time we saw
him and his family was when he successfully rids off Imhotep,
then riding off from the pyramids of ancient Egypt and
returning to their home in Europe. After almost seven years,
Brendan Fraser ("The Mummy," "Crash") returns as explorer Rick
O'Connell. In a new quest he is accompanied by his son Alex
(newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn, used to be played by Rachel
Weisz and now by Maria Bello, and her brother Jonathan played
by John Hannah Director Rob Cohen ("The Fast and the Furious")
took the helm in directing "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon
Emperor" revealing that the story centers on Rick's and Eve's
characters, as well as their now grown-up son, Alex.
Rick is hailed to combat the resurrected
Emperor Qin Shi Huang played by Jet Li who threatens to plunge
the world into his merciless, unending service. This awoken
mummy was doomed by a double-crossing sorceress Zi Yuan played
by Michelle Yeoh to spend eternity in suspended animation
thousands of years ago, together with his 10,000 warriors
entombed in clay as a vat, silent terracotta army. But when
dashing adventurer Alex O'Connell is tricked into awakening
his quest for world domination. Striding the Far East with
unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse
his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force, unless the
O'Connell can stop him first.
As with the previous "Indiana Jones" and "The Mummy"
movies, expect ingenious storylines infused with sure-fire
action sequences that are guaranteed to quench the fans'
longing for this most-awaited follow-ups.
