 Rep stages ‘Altar Boyz’


Anyone who loves the music of the Backstreet Boys, Take That or ‘N Sync is in for a treat as Repertory Philippines stages the winner of the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, "Altar Boyz."

The musical weaves a satirical story about four young heartthrobs – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Juan – who dream of making it on MTV as a Christian boy band. Together with an additional fifth member, their Jewish friend Abraham, they travel the world to pursue their mission of saving souls. With music composed by Gary Alder of Avenue Q fame and Michael Patrick Walter, Altar Boyz promises audiences a good time.

Chari Arespacochaga, who is behind the theatrical successes of Honk! Doubt, and Avenue Q, directs a stellar cast of thespians.

PJ Valerio takes on the role of Matthew. He has appeared in musicals like First Name and Stages’ High School Musical, where he played the role of Ryan Evans. Teatro’s Pilipino’s Romeo and Juliet.

Red Concepcion is Mark. He has appeared in Rep’s Hamlet, Dulaang UP’s Orosman at Zafira, He first appeared in Trumpets plays. He was also a dancer for Kaloob: Philippine Music and Dance Ministry and has appeared as a lead actor in films by Sword Productions.

Reuben Yu or Ryu as he likes to be called, stopped appearing in the theater to pursue a career with a boy band. Appearing in Altar Boyz as the slick and tough Luke brings him back onstage. He has portrayed memorable roles onstage like Frank Shepard, Littlechap, Ben Stone, and Hysterium.

Adding some Latin spice to the group is the character of Juan, played by Reb Atadero. He has appeared in productions of Ateneo Blue Repertory like Hope for the Flowers, Stages of Love, and the Asian stage premiere of High School Musical. He also played Robbie Hart in Repertory Philippines’ summer workshop production of The Wedding Singer.

Chevy Mercado plays the Jewish boy Abraham. He is a stage veteran at 23 having debuted onstage as Edmund in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe for Trumpets in 1998 at age 13. He also played the older brother, Peter, in the same production in 2002. He is a DJ and events host.

Jason Zamora of the Manoeuvres lends his street dance skills to the project.

Upcoming leading man Felix Rivera works behind the scenes, this time as vocal coach, with pianist Jojo Malferrari taking on the musical direction.

Costumes by Faust Peneyra complement Tuxqs Rutaquio’s set design. Martin Esteva provides the lighting design, and lensman Jojit Lorenzo captures all the boy band action up close.

Altar Boyz plays at Onstage Theater Greenbelt 1 from April 4-27. Shows on Fridays and Saturdays are at 8 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3:30 pm.
