Mike drops libel charges
Change of heart after medical crisis

JOSE Miguel Arroyo, the President’s husband, has instructed his lawyers to withdraw all libel cases against critics and at least 46 members of the media.

In a statement read by Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, Arroyo offered the hand of peace and said he hopes that he could build a more constructive relationship with critics.

"Seeking redress for all the grievances that the libel suits sought to address now pales in comparison to taking on a genuine chance to make peace and to pursue a more positive and constructive relationship with those who will accept my offer of a handshake," he added.

SC tells Comelec to make public
party list nominees

THE Supreme Court yesterday ordered the Commission on Elections to make public the names of party list nominees, citing the people’s constitutional right to information and to an "informed judgment."

The SC granted the petition of Akbayan Rep. Loretta Ann Rosales and former Senate President Jovito Salonga representing the groups Kilosbayan and Bantay Katarungan Foundation to compel the poll body to release the names of candidates running for sectoral representation.

The court is presently staffed by only 12 members. Associate Justice Renato Corona and Ma. Alicia Austria-Martinez are on leave and Associate Justice Romeo Callejo recently retired.

Thanks but no thanks,
say accused journalists

MALAYA publisher Amado "Jake" Macasaet said he objects to the withdrawal of the libel case against him, the editors and the reporters of Malaya.

"It is my determination to get a verdict based on the merits of the case and not on the mercy of the complainant, First Gentleman Mike Arroyo. I will not owe my freedom to him," he said.

Macasaet, in a separate statement issued as chairman of the Philippine Press Institute said: "We wish First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo did not opt to drop the slew of libel charges he had filed against newspapermen for stories which we believe were true and accurate and for commentaries which we believe were fair and involved issues which were of public interest.
