TANAUAN CITY. — The Toyota Otis Sparks went
to RJ Jazul in the last four minutes to eke out a thrilling
89-86 win over San Mig Coffee and force a knockout match in
their quarterfinals match-up Monday in the PBL Lipovitan Amino
Sports Cup at the President Jose P. Laurel gym here.
Jazul highlighted the team’s bristling 13-0
run with a huge three-point shot and a steal to complete their
amazing comeback. He finished with 18 points, 15 of them on
triples, on top of five assists, three rebounds and two steals
in 29 minutes of action.
"He has been our savior since he rejoined the
team late in the first round. He has good decision-making
skills," said coach Ariel Vanguardia.
"He’s just a small guy but he kept us from
falling apart. He gave me a lot of headaches in the NCAA, but
with him in the team I feel so confident," added Vanguardia of
his 5-foot-9 guard.
The winner in the do-or-die game Wednesday at
the Oreta Sports Center in Malabon will join Harbour Centre and
Hapee Toothpaste in the Final Four.
The Coffee Kings went into the game armed
with twice-to-beat advantage after finishing fourth in the
double round elims.
Jazul made just one basket in the payoff
period but it turned out to be the vital push the Sparks needed
to turn the game around. After burying his fifth and last
triple, Jazul came through with a big steal that led to another
triple by Patrick Cabahug as the Sparks closed in at 84-86.
After San Mig’s JP Alcaraz lost the ball to
the sidelines, no thanks to Toyota Otis’s pressing defense,
Cholo Villanueva came through with a soft jumper that tied the
count at 86-all, still 1:54 left.
The Coffee Kings bungled their next two
offensive thrusts, including a hurried three-point shot by
Bonbon Custodio.
Center Erick Rodriguez shattered the seventh
and last deadlock with two charities off a foul by Neil Raneses
with only 18.7 ticks left.
"We showed that we have a character. We never
gave up despite trailing most of the way," said Vanguardia.
The game was delayed for about 10 minutes due
to a heavy downpour that rendered the floor slippery.
The Sparks got off to a hot start, racing to
a 27-21 lead in the first quarter before the Coffee Kings
outscored them in the second quarter 30-19 to take a 51-46 lead
at the break.
The Coffee Kings kept the Sparks at bay for
the 16 minutes until Jazul reignited the team’s machine.
Neil Raneses led the Coffee Kings with 25 points but was held
to just two points in the last quarter.
