'Stop Meralco from
passing on cost of theft'
Solon says systems loss charge is anti-poor

REP. Amado Bagatsing (Kampi, Manila), an ally of Rep. Pablo Garcia (Kampi, Cebu) has filed a bill that would prohibit Manila Electric Co (Meralco) from passing its systems losses to consumers, saying the charge is "anti-poor."

GSIS president and general manager Winston Garcia, who has been engaging the Lopez family in a word war over the ownership of the country's largest power distributor, is a son of Rep. Garcia.

He has been vocal about Meralco's lack of transparency in determining its rates and has been demanding that it open its financial records.

GMA blames media, political
foes for rice 'hysteria'

PRESIDENT Arroyo yesterday said the media and political opponents of various governments fanned the global panic and hysteria on rice shortage.

Arroyo made the pronouncement in her speech before the Soroptimist International of the Philippine region in Malacañang's Rizal Hall.

Some sectors have blamed the Philippines' rice auctions and continuous importations for contributing to the skyrocketing global price of the staple.

Private traders shun
auction for foreign rice

PRIVATE traders mostly stayed away from a rice import tender yesterday, hoping supplies will increase and prices ease on international markets in coming months.

The private traders and groups offered to buy only 21,560 tons out of a total of 163,000 tons on offer at the tender conducted by the National Food Authority.

Traders and NFA officials said both the government and the private sector would wait until prices soften before returning to market.
