NPAs kill 5
cops, 2
soldiers in ambushes
Policemen securing rally site for Mindoro gov
FIVE policemen tasked to secure a campaign
sortie of re-electionist Occidental Mindoro Gov. Josephine Sato
were killed yesterday while five other policemen were wounded in
an ambush staged by New People’s Army rebels.
In Negros Occidental, two soldiers died in an
NPA ambush in Escalante City.
Lt. Col. Rhoderick Parayno, Southern Luzon
Command spokesman, said the policemen from the Provincial Mobile
Group were on their way to the rally site in San Jose town at
around 7:30 a.m. when the rebels numbering about 30 detonated an
improvised landmine and opened fire.
Generals group calls for
stop to poll cheating accusations
AN organization of active and retired
military and police generals yesterday told the Bantay Boto to
stop accusing the military establishment of election
irregularities.
"It is best for us to stop all these. Let us
give our soldiers a break," said Association of Generals and
Flag Officers (AGFO) chairman and president Brig. Gen. (ret.)
Jaime Echeverria.
On Tuesday, Bantay Boto, an alliance of
retired military and police generals, presented to media "Oplan
Mercury Rising," a supposed government plan to cheat in 16
regions and provinces covering over 14 million votes.
Military says license plate used
in Burgos snatching stolen from camp
THE military unit linked to the abduction of
activist Jonas Joseph Burgos might be trying to get off the hook
by saying the license plate seen in the suspect’s getaway
vehicle was stolen from its custody, but it could still be held
liable under forestry laws for the loss of evidence in an
illegal logging case.
An official of the Department of Environment
and Natural Resources yesterday said the loss of plate TAB 194
under the custody of the Army’s 56th Infantry Battalion should
be attributed to the soldiers’ apparent neglect of duty.
Sosio Quintana, DENR-Central Luzon regional
technical director for forestry, said the 56th IB has "no
excuse" for the loss of the plate as the area where the vehicle
was impounded is "under strict security."
