soldiers in ambushes

Policemen securing rally site for Mindoro gov

FIVE policemen tasked to secure a campaign sortie of re-electionist Occidental Mindoro Gov. Josephine Sato were killed yesterday while five other policemen were wounded in an ambush staged by New People’s Army rebels.

In Negros Occidental, two soldiers died in an NPA ambush in Escalante City.

Lt. Col. Rhoderick Parayno, Southern Luzon Command spokesman, said the policemen from the Provincial Mobile Group were on their way to the rally site in San Jose town at around 7:30 a.m. when the rebels numbering about 30 detonated an improvised landmine and opened fire.

Generals group calls for stop to poll cheating accusations

AN organization of active and retired military and police generals yesterday told the Bantay Boto to stop accusing the military establishment of election irregularities.

"It is best for us to stop all these. Let us give our soldiers a break," said Association of Generals and Flag Officers (AGFO) chairman and president Brig. Gen. (ret.) Jaime Echeverria.

On Tuesday, Bantay Boto, an alliance of retired military and police generals, presented to media "Oplan Mercury Rising," a supposed government plan to cheat in 16 regions and provinces covering over 14 million votes.

Military says license plate used
in Burgos snatching stolen from camp

THE military unit linked to the abduction of activist Jonas Joseph Burgos might be trying to get off the hook by saying the license plate seen in the suspect’s getaway vehicle was stolen from its custody, but it could still be held liable under forestry laws for the loss of evidence in an illegal logging case.

An official of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources yesterday said the loss of plate TAB 194 under the custody of the Army’s 56th Infantry Battalion should be attributed to the soldiers’ apparent neglect of duty.

Sosio Quintana, DENR-Central Luzon regional technical director for forestry, said the 56th IB has "no excuse" for the loss of the plate as the area where the vehicle was impounded is "under strict security."
