Leader of Compostela
bet for gov shot dead

A CAMPAIGN leader of Compostela Valley gubernatorial candidate Tiongke Uy was shot dead inside his house in Montevista town Tuesday morning.

Police said victim Ernie Arevalo Tatoy alias Nonoy, 41, was an electronic technician who was helping government in the anti-insurgency drive.

Police said three men handed Arevalo campaign leaflets of another gubernatorial candidate. One pulled out a gun and shot Arevalo and his daughter Angie Rose, 13.

Although wounded, Arevalo ran away from his attackers, but succumbed to his wounds 100 meters from his house.

Angie Rose survived a wound in her leg.

As of yesterday, Director Wilfredo Garcia, directorate for operations chief, said the police had listed 146 cases of election-related violence, with 98 killed and 98 wounded.

PNP chief Oscar C. Calderon said the PNP is 100 percent ready for Monday’s elections, with redeployments completed.

On his way to Cebu, Calderon inspected the readiness of police forces in Lucena City, Masbate, Tacloban, and Western Samar.

Calderon, however, conceded election-related violence cannot be totally stopped.

"We still need the help of the community. We still need the help of the media and everyone else so we can make these elections as credible and as honest, orderly, and peaceful as it can be," he said.

He said the New People’s Army rebels are a threat as they have vowed to disrupt the elections.

He said he has also ordered tight monitoring on the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the Moro National Liberation Front, the Abu Sayyaf and the Jemaah Islamiah.

He said these groups are operating in Regions 9 (Western Mindanao), 12 (Central Mindanao), and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

In Nueva Ecija, a panel of prosecutors has been formed to conduct preliminary investigation into the April 26 shootout at checkpoint near a political rally in Jaen town that killed a candidate for councilor and a police escort and injured 17 others.

Four separate cases for murder, frustrated murder and attempted murder have been filed by the camp of former Jaen Mayor Antonio Prospero Esquivel.

Named respondents were Nueva Ecija 4th District Rep. Rodolfo W. Antonino, an Insp. Gamilo, SPO2 Hermenigildo Eduardo, PO1 Modesto Catacutan, PO1 William Catacutan and several John Does.

Provincial prosecutor Floro F. Florendo said the panel is composed of assistant provincial prosecutors Felicisimo Villaflor, Eddie Gutierrez and Dionisio Ledda Jr.

Region 3 police director Chief Supt. Ismael Rafanan said: "Masaktan kung sino man ang masaktan. Ma-pulis o sino man siyang malaking tao, kakasuhan natin ang mga iyan kung ito ang lalabas sa ating imbestigasyon. Siguradong walang white-wash dito." – Raymond Africa and Jojo de Guzman
