GA Muhlach was
obviously surprised, if not amused, when he and Marian Rivera were named the
male and female "Faces of the Night" at the recently-concluded awards ceremony
of the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. (or GMMSFI).
The citation was a bonus for Aga, who was there to receive
the Best Actor trophy for his blockbuster film last year, "A Love Story."
The best actress was Maricel Soriano, who was also in "A Love
Story."
Aside from these two acting awards, "A Love Story" went home
with best producer trophy for Star Cinema and best story and screenplay
citations for Carmi Raymundo and Vanessa Valdez.
"Box-office King and Queen" were John Lloyd Cruz and Bea
Alonzo, for their movie, "One More Chance." At its helm was Cathy Garcia-Molina,
who was cited as best film director.

Marian was truly the most charming of the female celebrities
present. She was smiling all throughout the event, from the time she received
her "Most Promising Star" trophy and the "Face of the Night" prize from Dr. Joel
Mendez, who owns a dermatological clinic.
Marian’s and Aga’s prize, worth P50,000 each, consisted of
free medical services from Dr. Mendez’ clinic.
Marian’s TV series, "Mari-mar," won as most popular TV show.
Its directors, Joyce Bernal and Mac Alejandre, got a trophy each as best TV
director.
A little aside: Bb. Joyce had just arrived when her name and
that of Direk Mac were called. As she rushed to the stage to receive her trophy,
she didn’t notice that she was still carrying her backpack. Aga, who was seated
in the front, along with Dolphy, quickly signaled to Direk Joyce to leave
her bag with him.
Sitti, named female recording artist of the year, had a
litany of names to thank. Someone noticed that she was overly made up that
night.
In contrast, Sarah Geronimo, the female concert performer of
the year, looked plain.
By the way, Sarah is currently doing a movie with John Lloyd
Cruz for Star Cinema and Viva Films.
Gian Magda-ngal, the most promising male singer, came with
girlfriend Sheree, who has just given birth to their firstborn, a boy.
Sheree, a member of the Viva Hot Babes, is back to her old
form.
Gabby Concepcion and Kim Chiu were the hosts of the event.
Poor duo, they looked unprepared. Gabby, in particular, was ineffective in his
adlibs. He tried to be funny but failed.
Kim, who was made to look older with her hairstyle, wasn’t so
bad. But what can you expect from someone who just turned 18 and has no
extensive experience as a host?
Gabby and Kim, we were told, were actually last-minute
replacements. Pops Fernandez was the original choice to host the show, but she
reportedly developed an allergy.
By the way, how true are reports that last Mother’s Day,
Martin and his two kids, Robin and Ram, treated Pops to a blowout?
Does this mean that Martin and Pops have kissed and made up? They had a rift
because of the controversy created by the Yes Magazine article where Pops boldly
confessed Martin’s indiscretions and the emotional stress she suffered in their
12 years of marriage.
