The "Water is Life" photo contest deadline for submission of
entries has been extended to July 15, 2008. The contest is open to both amateur
and professional photographers all over the country.
The contest theme, "Water is Life" aims to visualize
dramatically the importance of water that impacts all aspects of life and the
problems that threaten the country’s water resources.
Executive Director Ramon B. Alikpala of the National Water
Resources Board (NWRB) said that photo entries should focus and highlight water
as a core element of life; the pivotal role played by the water systems in the
sustainability of human life; and water and sanitation issues and concerns.
Alikpala added that there are so many problems and issues
that threaten users and the water source that nurtures its use. Among the water
issues are water shortage due to over-extraction of groundwater sources;
pollution of rivers, seas and lakes caused by dumping of domestic and industrial
wastes; flashfloods and dwindling source of surface water due to neglect of
watersheds and over-exploitation of forest resources; and about 18 Filipinos are
dying every day from water and sanitation-related diseases.
The winning entries and all the finalists will be announced
and exhibited in one of the biggest malls in Metro Manila on August 14.
The prizes for the winning photo are as follows: 1
prize – P15, 000 and special prize of P10, 000 for each category namely, Water
for Food and Agriculture, Water for People and Water for Health and Sanitation.
The NWRB in cooperation with the German Agency for Technical
Cooperation (GTZ) and the Philippine Water Partnership (PWP) initiated the
contest. Sponsors of the photo contest include GTZ, Manila Water Company, Inc. (MWCI),
Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (MWSI), Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA),
