Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST), a leading
worldwide hard disk drive manufacturer, recently organized a staff campaign
called "Clean Up Mount Banahaw ‘08" to fulfill its commitment to preserving the
natural environment.
More than 50 Hitachi GST staff spent a day at Mount Banahaw
picking up waste and garbage. A total of 32 garbage bags of debris, consisting
of plastic products, shampoo sachets, detergent packs, and other camping items
were collected in the one-day clean-up activity. In addition to cleaning up the
mountain, Hitachi GST also donated ten trashcans and garbage bags to officials
of Barangay Sta. Lucia, to provide the community with additional tools for
keeping the area clean in the future.
Mt. Banahaw is a popular tourist spot and is one of the
most-climbed mountains in the Philippines, with hiker numbers reaching the
thousands during peak seasons such as Holy Week. However, tourists and hikers
who come to the mountain for picnics and pilgrimages are also responsible for
the quick accumulation of trash and debris on the mountain trails. "We want to
make sure that the beautiful and pristine Banahaw that we climb today will
remain as magnificent for climbers of the next generation. It all starts with a
little volunteerism, and a lot of cleaning," said Cielo Araullo, Unit Manager of
the Environment Section, Facilities Department of Hitachi GST.
