Adamson goes for sweep of finals

ONE-up and all pumped-up, Adamson goes for the clincher as it tries to make it back-to-back against Ateneo for a sweep of the Shakey's V-League Season 5 championship at The Arena in San Juan today.

With Neriza Bautista dishing off an MVP-like performance, the Lady Falcons subdued the Lady Eagles 25-7, 25-14, 23-25, 25-22 last Tuesday in the opener of their best-of-three series for the country's premier women's volley crown sponsored by Shakey's Pizza.

The 22-year-old Bautista unloaded a 30-point game in Game One, practically shredding Ateneo's defense with her power hits that either pierced through the middle or which the Eagles simply just failed to return.

Bautista is again expected to attack Ateneo's net defense in their 4 p.m. encounter although the Lady Eagles will also have to contend with the likes of Rissa Laguilles, Angela Benting, Michelle Segodine, Janet Serafica and Jill Gustilo to stop the Falcons from wrapping up the series and scoring a breakthrough win in the league organized by Sports Vision.

"Nene (Bautista) really worked very hard to bring the team to the finals and hopefully to the championship," said Adamson coach Dulce Pante. "This is her breakout conference."

But it isn't an all-Bautista show as the rest of the Falcons, whose previous best finish was third in Season 3's first conference in 2006, continued to play as a team, particularly in floor defense that often set their offense in motion, including their quick plays.

Meanwhile, the league, backed by Active White skin whitening products, Mail and More, ICT Call Center, 100Plus Energy Drink, Mikasa and Accel, will fete the season's top performers in the Shakey's Individual Player awards and Shakey's Photo Journalism Contest after the battle for third place between San Sebastian and Lyceum at 2 p.m.

The Lady Stags are also looking to finish off the Pirates in their separate best-of-three playoff after posting a 25-17, 27-25, 25-23 win last Tuesday.

The SSC-Lyceum match will be shown on NBN-4 starting at 2 p.m. tomorrow while the Adamson-Ateneo duel will be aired on Sunday. For updates, log on to www.v-league.ph.
