Church to give lawmakers Bacani book on RH bill

FR. Anton Pascual, Radio Veritas president, said the Catholic Church will be gifting congressmen with a copy of the book written by Novaliches Bishop emeritus Teodoro Bacani titled "Catholics and HB 5043-Reproductive Health 2008" when Congress reopens next week.

Pascual said they hope the book will enlighten the lawmakers. "Hopefully the minds of those pushing the passage of this bill will realize that life is sacred and that this is God’s gift to mankind."

The Church considers the bill anti-life.

Pascual said that aside from book-giving, the Church will also put up pro-life billboards in different parts of the country as part of their campaign against the controversial bill. He said the billboard will bear the words "Yes to Life, No to RH bill."

The Church has been chipping away at the RH bill in the past months, gathering signatures from the faithful, releasing pro-life DVDs and organizing indignation rallies. Pro-life groups and several prelates have also attended debates on the bill at the Lower House to show their strong opposition to its passage.

The bill’s principal author, Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, had said they need only eight more congressmen to sign up to get the measure passed into law. – Gerard Naval

Ex-con shoots cop dead in Pasay

A VETERAN police investigator of the Pasay City police was shot dead Wednesday night by an ex-convict in a case apparently sparked by a petty feud.

Southern Police District (SPD) director Chief Supt. Jaime Calungsod identified the fatality as PO3 Reynaldo Aguba, a member of the Pasay police’s Station Investigation and Detective Management Section.

Calungsod ordered a manhunt against the suspect identified as Lito Tagalog, 31, a jeepney barker of Loring Street who had been jailed for a year for robbery and is believed to be a Sigue-Sigue Sputnik gang member.

Aguba’s son-in-law James said they were drinking beer outside their house in Pilapil Street when Tagalog came along and shot Aguba who died from a lone gunshot wound in the chest.

Case investigator SPO1 Allan Valdez said Aguba had no known enemies in the neighborhood but his wife Nonet had a fight with Tagalog’s live-in partner Katherine Serrano some three months ago. The couple’s son had apparently defecated in front of the Agubas’ eatery. Valdez said they will invite Serrano for questioning. – Ashzel Hachero
