Bread prices go down next week

BAKERS’ groups yesterday said they will cut bread prices next week as prices of flour in the local and international market have started going down.

Lucito Chavez, vice president of the Philippine Federation of Bakers Association Inc., said their group would slash by 50 centavos the price of loaf breads and 25 centavos in the price of "pan de sal."

"Ang presyo ng pan de sal ay bababa ng 25 centavos per 10 pieces. But we will retain the price of a P2 pan de sal. Instead, we will just add another 2 to 3 grams to our current 25 to 30 grams pan de sal," Chavez said.

The group of community bakers, Philippine Federation of Bakers Association Inc., the association of large bakeries, Philippine Baking Industry Group (PhilBaking) and the Filipino-Chinese Bakeries Association Inc. all agreed to slash the prices of bread products, Chavez said.

The price of a 25-kilogram bag of hard flour went down from P957 to P940.

Earlier, flour millers assured consumers that there would be no increases in the price of the commodity until the end of the year.

Flour millers said the recent drop in flour prices was due to decreasing prices of wheat grains in the global market.

They added that fierce competition among flour millers for a larger share of the market during the holiday season is pulling down prices.

Consumption of flour historically goes up during November and December, when demand for bread products for holiday festivities goes up.
