he
coffee table book Garment of Honor, Garment of Identity will be
launched on Tuesday, December 2 at the second level of the Mall
of Asia.
Researched and written by Dr. Corazon Hila,
Mitzi Reyes, and Anita Feleo, the book is a journey of discovery
through the richness of Philippine culture and the history
behind the fabric that every Filipino regards as his national
costume. With photographs by Neal Oshima, Garment of Honor,
Garment of Identity showcases many of the key provinces and
hardworking individuals who bring the barong to light in all its
delicate beauty – unsung heroes of Philippine art, whose main
product has become a garment of defining moments in the lives of
Filipinos, from cradle to grave.
EN Barong Filipino, which produced the book,
is a pioneering ready-to-wear chain specializing in the barong.
Its factory in Quezon City turns out more than 100,000 barongs a
year. Founded in 1961 by Felicidad Eguia Nadres, the
family-owned corporation has built its name on rtw barong cut
from the finest materials, including pina, jusi, abaca, cotton,
and blends of these natural fibers – all embroidered and sewn by
experts at the craft. Their product line offers a wide variety
of styles, designs and colors.
Garment of Honor, Garment of Identity is the
fulfillment of Nadres’ life-long obsession of adding to the body
of work on Filipiniana through an aspect of Philippine tradition
that she knows best.
A photo exhibit detailing the barong’s
lifespan from fiber to fashion statement will also be on view
during the book launch, and will be traveling throughout the
regions to enable the general public to know more about our
national dress.
Key government officials from provinces whose
socio economic profiles mirror the development of the barong –
Aklan, Batangas Bulacan, Bacolod, Iloilo, and Laguna – have been
invited to grace the launch, which is being organized by
Creative Two.
Garment of Honor, Garment of Identity will be available at
SM’s Kultura Filipina and at selected bookstores nationwide.
