Comelec delists 5.6M registered voters
CLOSE to six million Filipinos will not be able to vote in the 2010 national elections after their names were delisted from the voters’ list by the Commission on Elections.
Data from the Comelec–Election and Barangay Affairs Department (EBAD) showed a total of 5,606,964 voters have had their registration deactivated for various reasons as of July 20.
Of the total number of deactivated voters, 99.9 percent or 5,603,154 were dropped because of their failure to vote in two successive elections.
Other reasons for deactivation include the loss of Filipino citizenship (1,665); excluded by Court order (1,071); incarceration (947); crime of disloyalty to the Philippine government (115); and insanity or incompetence (12).
The Comelec said the total number of registered voters is now 45,487,634, almost the same number it registered (45.5 million voters) in the 2007 midterm polls. It had previously said it was expecting to register some 48 million voters for the 2010 presidential elections which traditionally generate more interest among the electorate.
Region 4-A (Calabarzon) had the highest number of registrants with 6,059,168, followed by the National Capital Region with 5,347,649, and Region 3 (Central Luzon) with 5,098,495 registered voters.
Other voter-rich regions are Regions 6 (Western Visayas) and 7 (Central Visayas) with 3,577,665 and 3,523,508, respectively.
The Cordillera Administrative Region had the lowest number of registrants with only 809,979 as of July 20.
A total of 2,736,047 new registrants were recorded by the poll body during its continuing voters’ registration process. Registration for the 2010 polls ends on Oct. 31. – Gerard M. Naval
