N.Ecija town unveils sorghum
distillery, power plant

CABIAO, Nueva Ecija.-The municipal government of this southernmost town in Nueva Ecija is bent on establishing a multi-million peso sweet sorghum distillery and power plant.

Coinciding with the recent celebration of the 112th Unang Sigaw ng Nueva Ecija, Mayor Abundia L. Garcia led local officials in joining Dr. William D. Dar, ICRISAT director-general, Dominador B. Andres, assistant secretary for field operations of the Department of Agrarian Reform, and Bernardo D. Tadeo, president of Full Advantage Phils. Intl., in the groundbreaking ceremonies of the facility in Barangay Bagong Sikat.

Unveiled was a 40,000-liter per day bio-ethanol distillery and a 5-megawatt combined heat and power (co-generation) plant which would serve as this town's contribution to the government's call for food security, energy independence and sustainable development.

Garcia said the P720-million project is the first of its kind to be established in the country. It will power the entire municipality at a lower cost. - Jojo de Guzman
