Lighter side of BF

Many are predicting that come November, when GMA-7’s top-rating popularity singing contest "Celebrity Duets" comes to its conclusion, Metro-Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Bayani Fernando shall be proclaimed as the grand winner in the show’s second season.

Chairman Fernando, more popularly known as "BF" has consistently been leading the results of text voting week after week in the show. He has been getting strong support from his kababayan in his hometown Marikina (where his programs and projects are carried out excellently by Mayor Marides Fernando, his lovely wife) and those who have great respect for his strategic governance in MMDA. BF is held in the highest esteem because of the way he upholds the law, instills discipline and gives the Filipinos a glimmer of hope for a brighter future.

BF says that everywhere he goes now, people tell him they vote for him on "Celebrity Duets." "Marami ding bumoboto sa atin na mga medyo senior citizens na. Nakakataba naman ng puso kasi pag nakikita nila ako ngayon, humihingi ng kiss at sinasabi na sumusuporta sila sa akin. Yung iba nga ang sabi, nagpapatulong silang mag-text dun sa mga apo nila," he said amused but nonetheless thankful for the kindness of these people.

BF has so far performed a duet with Renz Verano ("Macho Guwapito"), Andrew E. ("Hahabol-habol"), and Janno Gibbs ("Beyond the Sea") in the show and each number was well-received by the audience. Most of those who have been following the show swear that BF has been showing excellent stage presence and outstanding showmanship in his production numbers. "We are actually seeing a lighter side of BF and we are liking what we see," they said.

The chairman is no stranger to singing, a hobby he enjoys very much. As a matter of fact, BF is one of "three tenors" of the Philippines having performed in several concerts before with his "partners" Sec. Angelo Reyes and Sec. Joey Lina. Their most recent gig was the Manila Hotel performance of international singer Petula Clark where they each performed two spot numbers and production numbers with the visiting artist.

In "Celebrity Duets," BF is competing against beauty queen Carlene Aguilar, chef JL Cang, comedian Joey Marquez, fashion designer JC Buendia, and soccer player Phil Younghusband. So far, two contenders have already been eliminated from the run, supermodel Melanie Marquez and socialite Cory Quirino, both of whom fearlessly forecasted at the beginning of the show that the grand winner will be a female.

BF says the show is not as demanding as he expected it to be. He only spends an hour or so three times a week for it, on Wednesdays for the piano rehearsal, on Friday for the band rehearsal and Saturday, the actual taping of the episode.
