KALOY SANCHEZ is holding his first solo
show "Hint:eye" until October 15 at the Gallery 2, West Gallery,
48 West Avenue, Q.C. In his works in acrylic, Sanchez depicts
the art of waiting. "My works romanticize the act of waiting.
When everything that surrounds you begin to grow or break down
and you become trapped in stillness, enjoying the wait." While
most people hate waiting, whether it is waiting in line, or
waiting for someone, Sanchez sees a brighter side, and how it is
not a waste of time at all. He came up with the title of his
show as a pun on the vernacular term for waiting, "hintay."
FILIAL, the art exhibition featuring the
works of Jerusalino "Jerry" Araos and his son Julian opened
yesterday at the Crucible Gallery at Bldg. A, SM Megamall. The
show, which runs until September 28, is the first joint exhibit
of the tandem. It celebrates the interaction of a son as student
with a father as mentor. With his functional sculptures of
chairs and benches, Jerry again displays his mastery of wood, a
material he has handled for more than three decades. Equipped
with woodworking skills learned from his father and fueled by
his youthful passions, Julian creates his brand of functional
works – chairs, benches, and skimboards.
BJORN CALLEJA opens his solo exhibit "The Land of My
Imaginary Friends," at 6 p.m. on September 21 at the Big & Small
Art Co. at SM Megamall. Calleja says his works depict the
imaginary friends that are often created by young children as a
means of getting away from the stresses around them. "They
develop them and confide in them, some friends possess
characteristics that their creators lack themselves," he says.
The reality he depicts in his works is often sad and scary that
it needs to hide behind and under cold hugs and false smiles…
the people, the show was put up to alter the tensions of reality
and portray different existing personalities as characters from
his subconscious, pop influenced, juvenile mind.
